Shelby Healey's wonderful world of colour and lines.......
featuredartist/shelbyhealey.jpg

I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember.  I think I would be a horrible person if I couldn`t create any art.  It is a very important part of my life. Last night I had a wonderful dream about being let loose in an enormous art supply shop ( Tenerife is a bit limited in that respect! ) Art keeps me balanced in that it both relaxes and excites me and I love colour, especially pink...

What is your favourite medium and what different techniques do you use?  I work mainly in acrylics on canvas now, but my background is in textiles.  I also sew and have recently been making a lot of collages.  Sometimes I work on the computer, creating patterns and using the prints in my work.  Often I have an idea in mind, maybe a photo or colour palette.  I usually create a background with layers of colour and build on that.  I often paint over old paintings that I am not completely happy with, letting the most interesting areas show through.

Have you ever felt like giving up? If so, what kept you going?  No. Occassionally I have a creative block which I either work through or I go for a walk or a swim until I feel better.  I have a very positive and encouraging family and I live in a very inspiring place.

To someone who wants to travel the path you’re traveling, do you have any advice?
Keep at it. Work at your own style.  Love what you do.    [More of Shelby's interview below....]

As an artist, what is your biggest source of frustration?
Not having the time to do all that I want.

As an artist, what’s your biggest source of satisfaction?  Creating something that asks to be looked at for a long time.

If you could visit a certain period of history to observe the art and artists, which era would you choose and why?
The early 1920's, to see the Surrealists at work.  I love the work of Chagall, Miro and Picasso, although he wasn't strictly a surrealist.
