what is art?

flowersintherainfortheblog.jpg

art is doing.  it is making.  it does not begin in some vague abstraction.  it is a physical process that allows the doer to transcend and move above the waves of this world for a few moments.

"write only what sells.  in fact, if you don't have a buyer for it, you shouldn't even write it."

this was a quote from an interview with a fairly popular writer which we saw in the newspaper. around the house, we've been discussing the comment for weeks.  on the one hand, kudos to the author for having such success.  it's great that she can make so much money...... but i also feel bad for her.  sure i am happy when my work sells but there is no way that money is my primary motivation.

making art is.

when i set to work, i am looking to lose myself in the process. it's the search for the transcendent.  maybe i'm deluding myself.  maybe artists should consider themselves just another group of buyers and sellers..........nah.....that attitude wouldn't work for me.  trying to make something beautiful is all that counts.  the rest is background noise.

it rains in the northeast today.  maybe the last of the warm rains before winter begins.

13oct06D.jpgmichael went up to campbell's ledge this afternoon.  i was on the computer working on this site.  he took several images... last night, we had our first frost.  which was much better then those poor people who got their first snow!  yep.  summer, with its lovely, lovely warmth is over.  change is good, right?

how do you compete with nature?
sunset2.jpgtoday was a rather whimsical day.  one moment the sky was dingy and morose.  the next, autumn's eerie light shone through the many turning leaves transforming them into grand and picturesque prisms.  back and forth..... and back and forth..... and back again.... the day's feeling changed constantly.  around 5pm, while peering out the front window, (did someone pull up?), i caught my breath.  this is what i saw this....... a mural of black purple and tangerine, cool salmon and deep gold with that little jolt of sunny yellow peaking up from behind the mountains for that one last glimpse of the passing day.  all colours were vying for attention - yet in the end, all of the colours worked together.  i cannot even say my fabric looks this way.  i cannot even say my fabric looks so very good.  this sunset is too beautiful not to share. ebcsunset2.jpg i attached a silk crepe de chine piece i found within my inventory.  the closest i could even come to in trying to dupilcate a sunset. hum....
